A close look at the manufacture of a dock lift by Frédéric, at the fabrication and welding station.
Today, we take a look at how a dock lift is manufactured. Frédéric, who works at the fabrication and welding station, explains how he prepared a dock lift that will be installed in a railway maintenance depot. He explains that the main function of this dock lift will be to transfer mobile loads (pallet trucks) from one level to another.
- Capacity: 1,500 kg
- Platform: 3 m x 1.50 m
With the help of the design office, and to fully meet the customer’s expectations, Frédéric worked from various general arrangement, assembly and sub-assembly drawings, so as to have all the technical data needed to carry out his work.
He has to follow a precise sequence to assemble and weld the various parts that make up the actual structure of the lift table. He starts with the base frame, then the arms, into which the bushes and rollers are fitted, followed by the stiffeners between the arms, which withstand the thrust of the hydraulic cylinders.

The last stage is the platform. It should be noted that a second, ‘floating’ platform is planned for this dock lift. This is the most time-consuming part to produce, as Frédéric has to weld numerous cross-members to ensure that the whole assembly, including the chequer plate decking, is properly stiffened. Once the table structure has been welded, it will go for degreasing and then on to the paint booth to be customised to the customer’s requirements.
